Newly crowned WWE Champion Brock Lesnar has his first opponent set for the Royal Rumble pay-per-view. And it is a match that, for a long time, many have wanted to see.

The ‘Beast Incarnate’ will take on Bobby Lashley at the January PPV. This came about after Lashley won a fatal four-way match on the latest episode of WWE Raw on January 4.

The match was originally set to take place at the Day 1 PPV on January 1. However, at the last minute, Lesnar was added to the match to make it a five-way match.

This happened because Lesnar’s original opponent for the event, Roman Reigns, tested positive for COVID-19. The two were set for a Universal championship match but that needed to be changed at the last minute.

As a result, Lesnar won the title from Big E and will now face Lashley as his first opponent.

It is a match that, for many fans – and for Lashley himself – has been a long time in the making. Both Lashley and Lesnar have many similarities in their pro-wrestling journeys.

This also includes successful stints in the world of mixed martial arts (MMA). Lesnar’s time at UFC was well-documented, but Lashley also had a successful stint at Bellator.

And now, the two behemoths are set to finally clash in a singles match in a little over three weeks time.

What are future plans for Brock Lesnar?

However, the Lesnar-Lashley match is seemingly set to be a one-off – at least for now, since plans can change in the WWE.

According to Bryan Alvarez on Wrestling Observer Live, the plans for WrestleMania is still Brock Lesnar vs Roman Reigns. And there is enough evidence to support this theory.

On the latest episode of RAW, Lesnar used Reigns’ “Acknowledge me” catchphrase. And his advocate Paul Heyman – recently fired as Reigns’ special counsel – also took shots at the ‘Tribal Chief’.

Still, the match between Lashley and Lesnar should be good. And it will be a big tick off Lashley’s list of dream matches; he has wanted this match since the day he returned to the WWE.

He also teased the match on Twitter after Day 1.

It’s safe to say that the Royal Rumble PPV just got a lot bigger, thanks to the WWE championship match between Bobby Lashley and Brock Lesnar.
