Stan Wawrinka and Adrian Mannarino will take on each other in the round of 32 of the 2022 ATP Astana Open on Monday, October 3.
In a recent indoor encounter in Metz, Stan Wawrinka ended a six-match losing streak and had his best season performance. Before retiring from his semifinal match due to a hamstring injury, the Swiss qualified for the tournament by winning five straight matches, including three three-setters. It was his first time playing on indoor hard courts in more than 20 months, and it was his first semifinal showing on the surface since the ATP Antwerp tournament three years prior, when he lost a wonderful opportunity to win just his second indoor title against Andy Murray in the final, 6-3 4-6 4-6.
A few weeks ago in Winston Salem, Adrian Mannarino put together an improbable run that resulted in a title win; yet, he hasn’t won a set on the main circuit since. Gijs Brouwer in the US Open and Constant Lestienne in Tel Aviv, two of his most recent losses, were to novice opponents; Mikael Ymer bageled him in the other match in Metz. The 34-year-old Frenchman participated in the tournament’s first Astana edition in 2020 (Nur-Sultan), reaching the final without dropping a set but falling to John Millman in straight sets.
