Shapovalov beat Borna Coric 6-4, 6-3 to set up a feisty semi-final tie against American tennis player Taylor Fritz.
Seventh seed Denis Shapovalov kept his perfect set record intact after defeating Borna Coric in the quarter-final of the 2022 ATP Japan Open on Friday. Shapovalov beat the Croatian 6-4, 6-3 to set up a feisty semi-final tie against American tennis player Taylor Fritz. This was the Canadian’s first win against Coric in three attempts which saw him return three out of four break points and score nine aces thanks to an impeccable service game. “I think I played great today,” Shapovalov said in a post-match press conference. “In general, my level the last two weeks has been great, so I’m very happy to be back in the semis.”
Third seed Taylor Fritz advanced to the last four of the ATP 500 competition after Nick Kyrgios withdrawal from their last eight tie. The Aussie, who won the Japan title in 2016, was the heavy favourite to win in 2022 but a left knee issue forced him to withdraw. “It’s obviously very disappointing,” Kyrgios said in a press conference. “It’s one of my favourite tournaments. I’ve had great memories here… It’s heartbreaking, but I’ll be here next year. That’s for sure.”
Denis Shapovalov and Taylor Fritz are scheduled to face each other in the quarterfinal of the 2022 ATP Japan Open on Saturday, October 8. The tournament is scheduled to begin on October 3 and end on October 9.
