Denis Shapovalov and Borna Coric will take on each other in the quarterfinal of the 2022 ATP Japan Open on Friday, October 7.
Without playing a player ranked in the top 100, Denis Shapovalov advanced to the quarterfinals of an ATP 500 tournament this week in Tokyo. In the first round, he defeated world No. 121 Steve Johnson in straight sets, and in the second round, he completely crushed Rio Noguchi. The Canadian teenager previously reached the semifinals at ATP Tokyo, and both of his defeats here came against players ranked in the top 40, David Goffin in the most recent second round in 2019 and Daniil Medvedev in the semifinal of the 2018 edition.
Borna Coric will this week play an opponent who hasn’t claimed a championship since 2022 for the first time. In order to secure his spot in the quarterfinals, he defeated reigning ATP Adelaide winner Thanasi Kokkinakis and snapped ATP San Diego champion Brandon Nakashima’s six-match winning streak. Despite beginning the 2022 season outside the top 150 and missing seven months of the 2021 season due to injury, the former Croatian No. 1 is currently only six spots behind the Canadian in the most recent standings after winning the Cincinnati Masters two months ago.
Denis Shapovalov and Borna Coric are scheduled to face each other in the quarterfinal of the 2022 ATP Japan Open on Friday, October 7. The tournament is scheduled to begin on October 3 and end on October 9.
The ATP Japan Open 2022 will feature five rounds of competition apart from the qualifying matches. These are the round of 32, round of 16, quarter-final, semi-final and final. The tournament is scheduled to start on Monday, October 3 and conclude on Sunday, October 9.
