Jaume Munar Clara and Yosuke Watanuki will face each other in the round of 32 of the 2022 ATP Korea Open on Monday, September 26.
Yosuke Watanuki defeated Jaume Munar Clar in the first round of the ATP Winston Salem event last year, earning his second tour-level main-draw victory and first since Tokyo 2018. This time, the match will take place at a location that is significantly closer to Watanuki’s home. The Japanese player came within one set of losing to Hiroki Moriya in the final qualifying round. It would have been interesting to see how he would have fared had he lost that match and been given the opportunity to enter the main draw as a lucky loser given his solid track record as a lucky loser at this level. In ATP competitions, he has only succeeded in getting past the first round once thus far in his career.
Jaume Munar Clar’s previous two performances on the main tour ended in disappointing defeats. After falling to the underdog Roberto Carballes Baena, he lost a great opportunity to win the main event at the US Open. Last week in Metz, he again blew a break lead against a shaky Arthur Rinderknech. On outdoor hard courts in 2022, the Spaniard has won 12 of 20 possible matches, making this possibly his greatest season on the surface. His notable surface performances this year included making it as far as the third round at Indian Wells and the Melbourne quarterfinals (as a qualifier).
Yosuke Watanuki and Jaume Munar are scheduled to face each other in the round of 32 of the 2022 ATP Korea Open on Monday, September 25. The tournament is scheduled to begin on September 24 and end on October 2.
