Soon Woo Kwon and Pedro Martinez will take on each other in the quarterfinal of the 2022 ATP Japan Open on Friday, October 7.
After 14 unsuccessful tries spread over 10 months, Soon Woo Kwon was able to win back-to-back matches in tour-level competitions this year. In the first round, he defeated Alex de Minaur in straight sets, and in the second round in Tokyo, he defeated Mackenzie McDonald, who had just advanced to the ATP Seoul quarterfinals, in three sets. Since he participated in ATP Astana (250 – Nur-Sultan) around this time last year and won his first ATP championship there, defeating players like Alexander Bublik and James Duckworth, this is the ideal week for the South Korean No. 1 to finish his second-round struggles and get back in shape.
Prior to this week, Soon Woo Kwon hadn’t won back-to-back matches (in elimination events) all season. In contrast, Pedro Martinez Portero, who was Soon Woo Kwon’s opponent, hadn’t achieved that feat since the ATP Kitzbuhel tournament in July. Even though the Spaniard has struggled for the duration of the season and has only two more victories than the South Korean, his title-winning run on the clay courts in Santiago back in February will ensure that he has a great season.
Soon Woo Kwon and Pedro Martinez are scheduled to face each other in the quarterfinal of the 2022 ATP Japan Open on Friday, October 7. The tournament is scheduled to begin on October 3 and end on October 9.
The ATP Japan Open 2022 will feature five rounds of competition apart from the qualifying matches. These are the round of 32, round of 16, quarter-final, semi-final and final. The tournament is scheduled to start on Monday, October 3 and conclude on Sunday, October 9.
