Anett Kontaveit and Kaia Kanepi are scheduled to face each other in the semifinal of the 2022 Tallinn Open on Saturday, October 1.
Anett Kontaveit will be the first to admit that it has been difficult for her in Tallinn, despite the fact that she is still on track to win this first home competition. It took a dropped first set for her to rise to the challenge and win the following two sets in her first round match against Wang Xiy of China. In their second-round match, Tereza Martincova of the Czech Republic presented few difficulties and was eliminated after dropping just three games. Thoughts that Friday’s quarterfinal opponent Ysaline Bonaventure of France, the qualifier and world number 138, would prove to be equally simple pickings were quickly dispelled.
Kaia Kanepi started the week well, defeating number five seed Jelena Ostapenko in three sets before going on to beat world number 62 An Li of the United States in straight sets. Her quarter-final opponent, Karolina Muchova of the Czech Republic, appeared to be the easiest of the three she had faced, despite the fact that she was once on the verge of being a top 20 player before a series of injuries. Kanepi, on the other hand, started well, breaking serve in the first game of the match. However, when Kanepi forced a third match point in the third set, Muchova was unable to prevent the Estonian from converting.
