Alexander Bublik and Evan Furnes will face each other in the round of 32 of the ATP Moselle open on Wednesday.
Alexander Bublik has had a terrible nine months, and the lone high point of his campaign was winning his first ATP title in Montpellier, France, when he defeated top-seeded Alexander Zverev and Roberto Bautista Agut with remarkable victories. The powerful Kazakh did make it to another final in Newport a few months ago, but it was a forgettable performance because he blew a large lead against Maxime Cressy. Having said that, his career-high ranking of #30 came from his victory in Montpellier, and his second-place performance in Newport retains him among the top-50 athletes.
In order to advance to the ATP Metz main draw, Evan Furness took advantage of a somewhat favourable qualification draw by overcoming Geoffrey Blancaneaux in three sets and a shaky Quentin Halys in straight sets. It has taken the 24-year-old Frenchman a lot longer than anticipated to advance to this ATP competition stage. With three straight ITF titles under his belt, he had a dominant conclusion to the 2020 campaign and was anticipated to move up in 2021. That didn’t happen, though, as it took him some time to get used to the Challenger circuits and he quickly lost his momentum and confidence.
