The NBA season is upon us and it’s fair to say that we are all very excited as the 2022/23 season draws ever closer. There were a lot of players who performed very well last season. Players like Joel Embiid, Giannis Antetokounmpo, Nikola Jokic, Jayson Tatum etc come to mind. While those were the younger generation, the older generation did not do bad either. LeBron James finished the season with 30.3 per game only behind Joel Embiid in second place. Stephen Curry led the Golden State Warriors to their fourth title in eight seasons and in the process etched his name into NBA folklore.

In this article, we will take a look at the top 50 players to watch out for in the 2022/23 NBA season.

1. Joel Embiid (Philadelphia 76ers)

Joel Embiid had a breathtaking last season and it is fair to say that he came into his own and made himself the franchise player everyone thought him to be. Despite the presence of James Harden who himself is an MVP calibre player, Embiid took the reins and guided the Philadelphia 76ers to the Eastern Conference semifinals where they were undone by the brilliance of Jimmy Butler and the Miami Heat. Embiid finished the regular season with 30.6 points, 4.2 assists and 11.7 rebounds per game. He will look to make amends this season and lead the 76ers to the NBA title.

2. Giannis Antetokounmpo (Milwaukee Bucks)

The Milwaukee Bucks had a tough act to follow last season after winning the NBA title in the previous season. While not much went wrong, the performance of Giannis Antetokounmpo in the regular season was something else. The Greek Freak as he is fondly known finished the regular season with 29.9 points, 11.6 assists and 5.8 assists per game. He is also coming off a great run at the EuroBasket tournament where he led Greece to the quarterfinals. After losing to the Boston Celtics in the Eastern Conference semifinals last season, Giannis will look to do one better and take his team all the way to the NBA title.

3. Stephen Curry (Golden State Warriors)

The indomitable Stephen Curry led Golden State Warriors team to yet another NBA title last season and it is now becoming ridiculous as to how easily he can shoot the ball if it was not clear already. Curry finished the regular season with 25.5 points, 5.2 rebounds and 6.3 assists per game. He also shot 38 percent from three point range ranking him among the best in the league. His best run however was saved for the last as he went on a tear in the playoffs where he averaged 27.4 points per game and was instrumental in helping Golden State win their fourth NBA title in eight years. He also broke Ray Allen’s record for most three pointers last season and is now the undisputed leader for three pointers.

4. LeBron James (Los Angeles Lakers)

LeBron James will play in his 20th season in the upcoming NBA season and it is crazy to think just how good he is given he is approaching 38 years of age. Although, the season before last, it felt like father time was catching up to Bron, he put those doubts to rest last season as he averaged 30.3 points per game and sat in second place behind Joel Embiid who finished in first place. LeBron also had 8.2 rebounds and 6.2 assists per game. Under new coach Darvin Ham, LeBron will look to add one more title to his already illustrious tally.

5. Kevin Durant (Brooklyn Nets)

The Brooklyn Nets did not have a good time last season as they finished in seventh place on the Eastern Conference table but Kevin Durant had a great regular season individually. KD finished the regular season with 29.9 points, 7.4 rebounds and 6.4 assists per game. He did ask to be traded in the off season but stayed with the Nets due to lack of takers. That should surely fire him up and given that he also has Kyrie Irving and Ben Simmons by his side, expect a totally different KD this upcoming NBA season.

6. Luka Doncic (Dallas Mavericks)

Luka Doncic came off age for the Dallas Mavericks last season as he led them to the conference finals. They lost to eventual champions Golden State Warriors but they went out with their head held high and Luka was central to that. Doncic averaged 28.4 points, 9.1 rebounds and 8.7 assists per game. The stats do great reading considering the fact he is only 23 years. Despite being so young, he is the most important player for the Mavericks and what they do this season will hinge on the brilliance of the Slovenian.

7. Kyrie Irving (Brooklyn Nets)

Kyrie Irving is a strange case as we all know. On his day, he is a world beater but those days come across very less these days. Kyrie was not able to play for the Nets for the first half of last season as New York had a strict COVID vaccine mandate. But since it got lifted, Kyrie was able to play and finished the season with 27.4 points per game in the 29 games that he played. He also recorded 4.4 rebounds and 5.8 assists. If there is one player who needs a good performance in the upcoming season, it is Kyrie and he knows that.

8. Nikola Jokic (Denver Nuggets)

Nikola Jokic won back to back MVP awards last season and it is not hard to see why he is so central to the Denver Nugget plans. Jokic was the only Nuggets player to perform to their full potential last season and because of that they finished in sixth place in the Western Conference. Jokic finished the regular season with 27.1 points, 13.8 rebounds and 7.9 assists per game. In the upcoming season, the Joker will be even more determined to win a hat trick of MVP awards and in the process take the Denver Nuggets all the way to the NBA title.

9. DeMar DeRozan (Chicago Bulls)

When the Chicago Bulls signed DeMar DeRozan last season, little did people envisage the impact he would have on the Bulls. The Bulls played with flair and it also had some fans compare them to Michael Jordan’s Bulls. The catalyst for that has been DeRozan. He finished the regular season with 27.9 points, 5.2 rebounds and 4.9 assists. Him along with the likes of Zach Lavine and Nikola Vucevic will be central to the success of Chicago and if they stay fit, should see them make the playoffs easily.

10. Jayson Tatum (Boston Celtics)

The Boston Celtics made it to the NBA Finals and lost out to the unstoppable Golden State Warriors. That run was made possible by their young core of players but none more so than Jayson Tatum. Tatum was instrumental in sweeping the Brookly Nets in the first round of the playoffs and also took down the Miami Heat over seven games in the Eastern Conference finals. Tatum finished the regular season with 26.9 points, 8.0 rebounds and 4.4 assists per game. He will look to make up for last season and lead the Celtics to the title this upcoming season.

11. Kawhi Leonard (Los Angeles Clippers)

Kawhi Leonard did not play last season as he suffered a torn ACL in his right knee. Without him, the Los Angeles Clippers finished last season with a 42-40 record and qualified for the play-in tournament. Kawhi made his return this preseason and dropped 11 points in a game against the Portland Trail Blazers. He will no doubt have a big say on how the Clippers perform this season and if they will be a threat in the Western Conference.

*Player missed last season through injury

12. Rudy Gobert (Minnesota Timberwolves)

In what was a surprising turn of event, Utah Jazz sent Rudy Gobert to the Minnesota Timberwolves and got a lot in return. Rudy had a great last season as he averaged 15.6 points per game but what is most impressive about him is his defensive prowess. Rudy averaged 14.7 rebounds per game and was a mainstay for the Utah Jazz. He also had a great EuroBasket tournament with France and will hope to take his good form into the new season with Minnesota.

13. Jamal Murray (Denver Nuggets)

Before Jamal Murray went down with an ACL tear in 2021, it looked like the Denver Nuggets would really go on to win the NBA title. Murray however succumbed to the injury and as a result missed the whole of last season. His absence was telling as the Nuggets finished in 6th place in the Western Conference with a 48-34 record. They were also beaten in the first round by eventual winners Golden State Warriors. The return of Murray will be seen as a huge plus for Denver and he has been putting up some good numbers in preseason.

*Player missed last season through injury

14. Devin Booker (Phoenix Suns)

The Phoenix Suns have a great roster but the star is none other than Devin Booker. Booker has been putting up great numbers and if he maintains his consistency, he will surely go down as one of the greats to ever play the game of basketball. Last season, he scored 26.8 points, 5.0 rebounds and 4.8 assists per game. It was because of the brilliance of Booker and Chris Paul that Phoenix finished in first place in the Western Conference. Booker will no doubt want to reach the NBA Finals this season and make up for losing to the Milwaukee Bucks in the 2020/21 season.

15. Donovan Mitchell (Cleveland Cavaliers)

Another player that the Utah Jazz let go is Donovan Mitchell. Last season, Mitchell averaged 25.9 points, 4.2 rebounds and 5.3 assists per game. There were some inconsistencies in his game last season but the talent is there and it is undeniable. He made his move to the Cleveland Cavaliers this season and Cleveland, for the first time since LeBron James left, has a world beater in its ranks. With the young base around him, Donovan Mitchell can lead the team to great things and if he does add some consistency to his game, then this season is going to be a memorable one for him and for the Cavs.

16. Trae Young (Atlanta Hawks)

The Atlanta Hawks hit the jackpot when they acquired Trae Young and the youngster has had a transformative effect on the team. He successfully took his team to the Eastern Conference finals in the 2020/21 season. It was a true testament to his character that he took on his haters and proved them wrong. Last season, despite the Hawks finishing in 8th place, Young averaged 28.4 points, 3.7 rebounds and 9.7 assists per game. He will look to take that rich vein of form into the new season and lead the Atlanta Hawks to the NBA playoffs.

17. Russell Westbrook (Los Angeles Lakers)

Last season was a very chastening one for Russell Westbrook. The former MVP who once averaged a triple double per game for three seasons straight had a very bad year back in his hometown of Los Angeles. That’s not to say that he was solely responsible for their malaise. Despite all the struggles and not fitting in with the Lakers, Westbrook averaged 18.5 points, 7.4 rebounds and 7.1 assists per game. He also had 10 triple doubles to his name. With the arrival of Darvin Ham as the new head of the Lakers, Russ will look to put the woes of last season behind him and start the season with a new hope.

18. Damian Lillard (Portland Trail Blazers)

The Portland Trail Blazers had a very bad last season as they finished in 13th place in the Western Conference with a 27-55 record. Much of that was down to Damian Lillard being out injured for half the season. Lillard only managed to play 29 games during that time and he put on some decent numbers to his credits. He averaged 24 points, 4.1 rebounds and 7.3 assists per game. This season, he will want to put his injury woes behind and take Portland to the playoffs.

19. Karl-Anthony Towns (Minnesota Timberwolves)

Karl-Anthony Towns has always been a great player but last season he improved his game and become a deadly three point shooter. He is now someone who is a presence inside the paint and is a sharp shooter from the perimeter. He also won the three point contest during the All Star weekend to further ramp up his credentials. Last season, Towns averaged 24.6 points, 9.8 rebounds and 3.6 assists per game. This season, with Rudy Gobert by his side, expect Towns to concentrate more on his shooting as Gobert guards the paint.

20. Jordan Poole (Golden State Warriors)

If there was one player that surprised everyone, it was Jordan Poole. Despite being just 23 years old, Poole showed maturity beyond his years and took over the scoring burden when Curry was out injured. He played 76 regular season games and averaged 18.5 points per game and made 474 field goals with a field goal percentage of 44.8. He also successfully scored 211 times from the three point line and had a three point field goal percentage of 36.4. Poole will no doubt look to continue from where he left off last season in a bid to defend the NBA crown.

21. Paul George (Los Angeles Clippers)

The Los Angeles Clippers will finally have a fully fit roster this season and the most exciting thing for them will be the return of Kawhi Leonard and Paul George. PG13 had a very stop start season in 2021/22 as he only completed 31 games. In those games, he averaged 24.3 points, 6.9 rebounds and 5.7 assists. What will be telling this season is if George and Kawhi can both manage to stay fit, will they be a threat to LeBron James and the Lakers? Only time will tell.

22. Klay Thompson (Golden State Warriors)

Klay Thompson made his much awaited return midway through the season and that gave the Warriors a shot in the arm. Despite playing only 32 regular season games, Klay averaged 20.4 points per game and made 246 field goals. He scored 114 times from beyond the arc and had a three point percentage of 38.5 which was more than that of Stephen Curry. Klay also had a free throw percentage of 90.2 and will be eager to get going in the upcoming season and will also look to make up for all the time he lost due to injuries.

23. Ja Morant (Memphis Grizzlies)

Ja Morant was one of the most entertaining players in the NBA last season. His performances included poster dunks, classy layups and some big plays in the clutch. The 23-year-old averaged 27.4 points, 5.7 rebounds and 6.7 assists per game. He was in the MVP conversation as he delivered every time he stepped on the court for the Grizzlies. His displays helped him win the Most Improved Player of the Season award. The All-Star will now be looking to further elevate his game and help the franchise get beyond the finish line this season.

24. CJ McCollum (New Orleans Pelicans)

CJ McCollum moved to the New Orleans Pelicans after spending nine years with the Portland Trail Blazers. His arrival was what proved to be the changing factor in the Pelicans’ resurgence in the second half of the season. McCollum proved to be the veteran presence that the team was looking for in the last campaign. He helped the young guns in the team get better and play to the best of their capacity and all of that led to the New Orleans Pelicans becoming a team to watch out for. The Pelicans understood the value that he brought and decided to sign him to a two-year $64 million extension. He will be expected to continue playing at a high level and lead the young group to make a deep run in the playoffs.

25. Jimmy Butler (Miami Heat)

Jimmy Butler has proven himself to be one of the best players in the NBA over the past few seasons. He is a terrific two-way player, who is unfazed by the big moments and has a knack of hitting clutch shots. The veteran has helped the Miami Heat to an NBA Finals and a Conference Finals appearance. He brings his best during the playoffs and that has helped the franchise massively. Having failed to win a ring so far, Butler is as locked in as ever entering the 2022-23 season. If he can stay healthy and play to the best of his capability, the Miami Heat will be strong contenders next season as well.

26. Zion Williamson (New Orleans Pelicans)

Zion Williamson signed a rookie max contract extension with the Pelicans during the offseason. The young sensation missed out on the whole of last season due to a foot injury. Reports emerged that Williamson was unhappy with the franchise, but his contract extension put all of those talks to rest. Although Williamson is one of the most physically dominant players in the league, he hasn’t been able to showcase a lot of that due to injuries. Going into the 2022/23 NBA season, health will be a major priority for Zion. However, he will also be looking to give in his best and help the New Orleans Pelicans to make a deep playoff run.

*Player missed last season through injury

27. Dillon Brooks (Memphis Grizzlies)

Dillon Brooks missed more than half of last season due to injury. Although the team managed to bag wins in his absence, the offense of the Grizzlies runs a lot more fluidly with him on the court. Brooks is a two-way player, who has proven to be big for the Grizzlies. He will be hoping to continue playing high-octane basketball for the team. The 26-year-old was criticized by the media for his shortcomings in the playoffs last season. Entering the new season, Brooks will be looking to correct those mistakes and become a star in the league.

Brandon Ingram is one of the most talented forwards in the NBA. He has a stellar offensive armory and his brilliance has helped the New Orleans Pelicans get out of many tough situations. Last season, when the Pelicans were without Zion Williamson for the entire season, Ingram stepped up for the team. He averaged 22.7 points, 5.8 rebounds and 5.6 assists per game while shooting 46.1 % shooting from the field. The one-time All-Star will be looking to take his game to the next level as the Pelicans are a side that will attract a lot of attention this season.

Tyler Herro was magnificent last season as he was crowned the 6th Man of the Year. However, entering into the 2022-23 season, the young guard is looking at transforming himself into becoming a starter for the Miami Heat. There is no doubt that he has the potential to find a spot, but the Heat team is stacked with options. But if Herro puts up some big performances, Spoelstra may have to consider giving him a starting spot. His position as a top player is enhanced now that he has signed a 4 year, $130 million contract extension. He will now have to bring his best to the court for the Miami Heat next season.

James Harden is one of the best scorers in the NBA and has a great offense that can wreak havoc on defenses. His move to the 76ers was regarded by many to be the one that will help the franchise get to a championship. However, Harden was a shadow of his former self with the 76ers. He completely let the team down in the playoffs. During the offseason, Harden stated that he was locked in on the goal of winning the championship in Philly. He proved that by starting work for the 2022-23 season early. If he is able to play to the best of his capability, the team will be a tough side to beat.

31. Khris Middleton (Milwaukee Bucks)

Khris Middleton is one of the most important players in the Milwaukee Bucks team. Without him, their offense seems to have problems as he is a vital piece that helps them get going there. This was evident as the Bucks lost their enthralling seven-game series to the Boston Celtics during the playoffs last season. He has taken clutch shots on numerous occasions and helped the Milwaukee Bucks out of difficult situations. When defenses try to stop Giannis from imposing his will, Middleton sort of takes over the game. It will be a key factor for the Bucks going into next season as the competition in the East is cranking up.

Jaylen Brown was one of the best players for the Boston Celtics during the 2022 NBA Finals. In the playoffs, he managed to average 23.5 points, 7.3 rebounds and 3.7 assists per game against a resilient Warriors defense. His ability to contribute on both ends of the floor has proven to be a great boost for the team. He is an All-Star player and certainly can get going in no time. With him on the roster, Jayson Tatum can play more freely as Jaylen Brown is an able scorer himself. He can play well off the ball and also be a problem in the paint.

Reggie Jackson was one of the best players for the Los Angeles Clippers last season as he averaged 16.8 points, 3.6 rebounds and 4.8 assists per game. He also showed off his leadership qualities as he led the team in the absence of Paul George and Kawhi Leonard. Jackson is a great player who can surprisingly shoot the ball very well and also has that burst of pace that can catch opposition teams off guard. Jackson will be central if the Clippers have ambitions to win the chip this season.

Seth Curry is one of the vital parts of the Brooklyn Nets roster as his shooting prowess is second to none. Seth averaged 15 points, 3.1 rebounds and 3.6 assists per game last season and he will look to add to those numbers this time around. The availability of James Harden and Ben Simmons should prove to be invaluable as he will get a lot of opportunities to drop his patented three pointer. He also has the habit of coming on in clutch situations and helping his team as was evident last season.

He averaged 17.5 points, 3.2 rebounds and 4.3 assists per game last season and he will look to build on that this season. Maxey has been working hard in the offseason to become an even better shooter. The Los Angeles Lakers shocked everyone when they signed Patrick Beverley this off season. Beverely has a history of problems with Russell Westbrook but it has been refreshing to see the two put their troubles behind and get on well this season. The three-time All-Defensive selection can make it very difficult for opponents as he can get into their heads with all his trash talk and tenacity.

Last season, Lopez started the season late as he was recovering from back surgery. However, this time around, the veteran has gotten enough time to prepare going into the 2022-23 season. Al Horford proved during the playoff campaign last season that he still has a lot of basketball left in him. He showcased tremendous quality on defense and scored points whenever the team needed him. However, his role will be a lot bigger in the 2022-23 season because of the injury to Robert Williams III. It means that Horford will have to take the court as the center and help his team out defensively. He certainly has the quality as he can deliver on both ends of the floor. The team will look to sign a free agent center, but Horford will indefinitely be their key piece due to his productivity.

39. Bam Adebayo (Miami Heat)

Bam Adebayo is one of the best defensive centers in the NBA as he has showcased it every night last season. He has grown from strength to strength each year and the same is expected from him going into this season. Last playoffs, Adebayo was not able to play to the level expected from him and that was one of the reasons why the Miami Heat fell to the Boston Celtics in the Eastern Conference Finals. Bam is powerful and can bully his way to the basket if given a chance.

40. Michael Porter Jr (Denver Nuggets)

Michael Porter Jr. is one of the best young two-way players in the league but he has not been able to prove that on a consistent basis as he has been riddled with injuries. Despite all his injury problems, the Denver Nuggets wasted no time in offering him a five-year max rookie extension. Going into this season, a lot of pressure is going to be on Michael Porter to finally show his true worth. With Jamal Murray and Nikola Jokic taking care of the offense, there is not much he needs to do there, but the defensive end is where Porter will have to bring in his A game.

41. Anthony Edwards (Minnesota Timberwolves)

Anthony Edwards is a young player and despite his age, he is one of the most important players on the Minnesota Timberwolves roster. Last season, he averaged 21.3 points, 4.8 rebounds and 3.8 assists per game and put up some real clinical performances. His ability to score in the paint and from beyond the arc helped Minnesota’s offense massively. Edwards is one player that will work hard to achieve what he has his eye set on. If he is able to make a significant impact on both ends of the floor, the Minnesota Timberwolves will be a tough side to beat during the 2022-23 season.

42. Joe Harris (Brooklyn Nets)

Joe Harris is one of the best shooters in the league but only that, he is also a great defender. His absence was deeply felt by the Nets last season as they lacked a player that could get the job done on both ends of the floor. Having gotten enough time to rehab from his long layoff, the Nets would expect Harris to be at his best this season. He has a lot of potential and if he is able to play to that, Harris could certainly help increase their chances of winning it all with Brooklyn.

43. Chet Holmgren (Oklahoma City Thunder)

Chet Holmgren was drafted as the number 2 draft pick by the Oklahoma City Thunder and there are high expectations from him. He shone for the Thunder in the Summer League as he averaged 12.0 points, 7.7 rebounds and 2.3 assists in just three games. He is a center but he can also play as a power forward due to his lanky frame. His leaps are much stronger than any average center and given the fact that he stands at 7 ft, he can rebound and block shots with ease. Holmgren is also a great three point shooter. He is currently recovering from a foot injury on which he had surgery.

*This is the player’s first season

44. Paolo Banchero (Orlando Magic)

The Orlando Magic picked Paolo Banchero as the number 1 pick in the 2022 NBA draft and you can see why. Banchero averaged 20 points, 5 rebounds and 6 assists per game in just two summer league games. He is a power forward that is 6 ft 10 and is an able presence in the paint. He has had a good preseason so far and has been scoring in double digits in all games and has been top scoring in most. It will be interesting to see how he will fit in with the team and the kind of impact he will have on the Magic.

45. Ben Simmons (Brooklyn Nets)

If there is one player that divides opinion in the NBA, it is Ben Simmons. Simmons has undeniable quality but he is a moody person who is often accused of not turning up when his team needs him the most. Because of that, the Philadelphia 76ers sent him to the Brooklyn Nets in early 2022 for James Harden. Simmons’ Nets career did not take flight until this preseason as he was injured for the entirety of last season. He made his Nets debut in preseason as he scored six points, dished out five assists and had four rebounds in a loss to the Philadelphia 76ers. Much will be expected from Simmons this season as he seems to be back fully fit and ready.

*Player missed last season through injury

46. Andrew Wiggins (Golden State Warriors)

After all the hype from previous seasons, Andrew Wiggins finally showed the world what he was capable of as he was instrumental in the Warriors winning the NBA Finals against the Boston Celtics. Wiggins was an ever present player in the regular season and played 73 games where he averaged 17.2 points per game. He scored 475 field goals with a field goal percentage of 46.6. Wiggins also scored 157 three pointers at an average of 39.3 percent. His defence was on point as he had 51 blocks last season at an average of 0.7 blocks per game.

47. D’Angelo Russell (Minnesota Timberwolves)

D’Angelo Russell is going to be a big player for the Minnesota Timberwolves going into the new season. As a point guard, he has excellent ball-handling skills and is also a brilliant scorer, but his role is going to be a lot different for the T-Wolves this season. Playing alongside two bigs, Rudy Gobert and Karl Anthony Towns, the former second-overall pick can wreak havoc on defenses with the pick-and-roll action. He has been great for the team so far, but with the team getting better, Russell will have to elevate his game to the next level.

48. Chris Paul (Phoenix Suns)

Chris Paul will be entering his 17th season in the NBA and is looking better than ever. Despite being 37 years, Paul has been a mainstay for the Suns alongside Devin Booker. Last season, he averaged 14.7 points, 4.4 rebounds and 10.8 assists per game. He also helped Phoenix finish first in the Western Conference last season as they had a 64-18 record in the regular season. CP3 will look to roll back time one more time in a bid to land his first NBA title and he has the right team around him to help achieve that goal.

49. Jrue Holiday (Milwaukee Bucks)

Jrue Holiday is one of the best two-way players in the league. As a point guard, he has elite court vision and often throws unbelievable passes to get the better of resolute defenses. On the other hand, Jrue is a brilliant on-the-ball defender. Since his arrival, the Milwaukee Bucks have improved as a defensive unit. He always delivers and the organization would hope nothing different from him next season. He alongside Giannis will hope to repeat their title triumph of 2021.

50. Victor Oladipo (Miami Heat)

Victor Oladipo was one of the best young stars in the NBA a few years back. However, two serious injuries seriously impacted his career and he went from being a starter to a mere rotational player last season. A lot of that could change for Oladipo when he takes the court for the Miami Heat this season. The 30-year-old has worked hard throughout the offseason and is set to prove his ability once again. It was the first time in several years that Oladipo had a summer where he had the chance to work on his game rather than do rehab for the injury. This will help him massively as he will be set to get going when given the chance by the coach.
